I have a role to play in my country and beyond

For birthday present from a friend, I got a box. Inside the box there are cards. Each card presents the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
I took it to work and every day I write the text of one of the cards on twitter.
Yesterday I wrote “I have a role to play in my country and beyond.”
It’s an important message. Especially in a welfare society of “somebody-else-ism”, where we expect much, but we expect someone else to live up to it and make it happen.
I am really fortunate to work every day with super cool people, around the world who follow a completely different “ism”! Today I have communicated with people in Brazil, Costa Rica, USA, India, Burkina Faso and Kenya. They are all heroes that make a difference! And I’m sitting here and am happy that I know them, and proud to be part of the same network as them – people who clearly ”play a role in their countries and beyond!” That is heroism and I do want to play such a role my self!

What do you want to be when you grow up my little friend? – An action hero!

Googling on how to become an action hero I found this! And what is better than to start with your children!

Raising a Hero

1. Start Small

Encourage children to be a positive bystander. Encourage them to be the one to stand up and say that bullying is wrong. Encourage them to befriend the victims of wrongful acts.

2. Label them Good

Children will respond better if we praise them by saying “What a good girl/boy you are for sharing your toys!” Instead of saying “It’s good to share your toys!” These positive labels will also instill in them a good self-image.

3. Get Physical

Research shows that real-life heroes have greater physical abilities and usually have specialized training which gives them the confidence to accomplish the task. For example, those with current CPR training are more likely to perform CPR than those who have not had training in a while.

4. Give them Responsibilities

Have your child take care of the animals, help with housework and so on. This will teach them at a young age the value of responsibility.

5. Be an Example in Action and Words

Kids will start out merely copying an adults actions, but with time this will begin to become like second nature and they will respond to a crisis situation without hesitation if they have seen an adult do the same.

6. Do not Always Pay

If the only motivation is an external motivation the child will be less likely to be motivated to help others when no external reward is apparent.

7. Do not Spank

Instead of spanking or swatting try other forms of discipline and then explain why the behavior is wrong and also the consequences of the behavior. Have the child play an active role in deciding punishement. REMEMBER, as the parent the ultimate veto power to whatever punishement the child suggests lies within your hands.

8. LOVE

Children raised with love and in a loving environment are more likely to help others than those children who do not feel they are loved or worthy.

My dream…

Sometimes the evident is right before your eyes. I often talk about the importance of setting a goal, and to know what you want to achieve – and then work hard to get there.

My blog was set up when I still had not read a single blog written by someone else, several years ago … And since then you could say that mine has contained a little this and that, what ever has occurred to me.

I realize that I have a long way to go before I meet my goals with the new name. But the blog will just be about my dream …

There will be a long process I suppose. Terms, tone and shape …

But isn’t it a tantalizing dream to do everything possible to become an action hero?

The definition in Wikipedia:

(…) In the face of danger and adversity or from a position of Weakness, display courage and the goodwill for self sacrifice-that is, heroism-for Some Great good of all humanity.

Wow, only the definition totally makes me get started!

And we’re now living in a world where we see super powers very often … So I must accept that this will rather be about my desire and dream, rather than spectacular heroism.

All support and coaching is very welcome!

Stina Berge – and my secret dream of becoming an action hero!

Jag byter nu namn på min blogg! Bättre sent än aldrig!

En av årets fredspristagare sa en gång: Peace is not an event – it is a process!

Men beware and stick with me, så får du se det växa fram!
