Golden Rule

Being a hero ought to be something that requires that you are consistent in your positions? Not that you can not learn something new and change opinion, but that “what you want others do to you, you should also do to them”?

I am grateful for Johan Norberg’s post in Metro today on  CAP and EU’s trade policies and agricultural subsidies.

Often when I get attacks on the issue of fair trade (living up to the most basic human rights in a work situation), it is precisely the argument that it is better to have free trade (as if it were a given contradiction…?)

It is easy to ask poor countries to open all their borders, while the EU subsidize their agriculture into absurdum, protects its borders and also dump their over production on markets that are likely to be totally wiped out by these subsidized products …

It does not rhyme well with the heroism… Cowards!

Executives and Presidents, please make yourself heard! You will be historical!

Yesterday I attended a seminar with a panel with Global Witness, Swedwatch, MakeITfair, Nokia, a representative from  the European Union, and the Swedish Defence Research Agency.

Informative, clear, different interesting approaches from those speakers’ different perspectives, and substantive solutions.

On Conflict Minerals.

It was noted soberly that the conflict in Congo (DRC) has over 5 million deaths and the highest rape rate in the world …

There was talk of laws and regulations that we all know will take many long months or years, of juggling before all EU countries agree and before we convinced China and other countries which are also involved to join …

A conflict in which the map of abuse matches with the map of where the mineral resources are to be found.

If we stick to non-personal feelings about this conflict, it was a good seminar. If we start listening to the stories from all the Congolese who sat in the audience, we know we missed out an important dimension.

Indignation over the world of silence …

There are heroes out there who defies death threats and choose the hard way to stand up for what they believe. It is easy to hide behind multinationals beautiful facades, but we must say: this is one of the worst conflicts and abuses committed in the history of the world!

And major economic interests help to keep the conflict alive. Far beyond the boarders of Congo.

I feel small and I am looking for heroism behind the thick wallets of executives and presidents.

“Executives and Presidents, please make yourself heard! You will be historical!”

QUALITIES OF A HERO : Fortitude

Fortitude has often been styled “passive courage,” and consists in the habit of encountering danger and enduring pain with a steadfast and unbroken spirit.”

Physical strength has nothing to do with this I guess. If it is not easier to feel the inner strength if the body is strong?
I find it hard sleep … hard to relax and get into the deeeeeep sleeping mode that I so truely want to feel. Mom thinks I should go to “sleep school”. I am though a bit skeptical about that. But I guess it is true that I probably would feel mentally stronger if I slept better …
I have resumed work out. I should get going there now!
Hope it will make me sleep better. And feel stronger!
Mental strength is the alpha and omega for a superhero!

Pokemon

My son, like many other children of this age in their school, plays with Pokemon cards. These cute little creatures are far from nice, I learned.

My son told me cheerfully about how strong each pokemon were and how much damage they could cause.

Due to my occupation (and social education?) it turns my stomach that such evil damage would be regarded as something positive.

So the discussion that followed took note that it is actually quite easy to damage. Do harm. However, what is heroic and very hard is to do things correct, save and heal.

It’s easy to throw a stone. Harder to catch it.

It is easy to say something nasty. Harder to get someone who is sad to feel happy again.

It’s easy to mess up. More difficult to clean.

Bottom line: It is more difficult to save than to harm. Pretto, but true! The true hero is the one who put things right, rescues and cares for all life and spreads joy.

What do you want to be when you grow up my little friend? – An action hero!

Googling on how to become an action hero I found this! And what is better than to start with your children!

Raising a Hero

1. Start Small

Encourage children to be a positive bystander. Encourage them to be the one to stand up and say that bullying is wrong. Encourage them to befriend the victims of wrongful acts.

2. Label them Good

Children will respond better if we praise them by saying “What a good girl/boy you are for sharing your toys!” Instead of saying “It’s good to share your toys!” These positive labels will also instill in them a good self-image.

3. Get Physical

Research shows that real-life heroes have greater physical abilities and usually have specialized training which gives them the confidence to accomplish the task. For example, those with current CPR training are more likely to perform CPR than those who have not had training in a while.

4. Give them Responsibilities

Have your child take care of the animals, help with housework and so on. This will teach them at a young age the value of responsibility.

5. Be an Example in Action and Words

Kids will start out merely copying an adults actions, but with time this will begin to become like second nature and they will respond to a crisis situation without hesitation if they have seen an adult do the same.

6. Do not Always Pay

If the only motivation is an external motivation the child will be less likely to be motivated to help others when no external reward is apparent.

7. Do not Spank

Instead of spanking or swatting try other forms of discipline and then explain why the behavior is wrong and also the consequences of the behavior. Have the child play an active role in deciding punishement. REMEMBER, as the parent the ultimate veto power to whatever punishement the child suggests lies within your hands.

8. LOVE

Children raised with love and in a loving environment are more likely to help others than those children who do not feel they are loved or worthy.

I have a dream today

Today it is the Martin Luther King. Jr day. In a blog on becoming an action hero, how could I not mention this…

So let us read from his famous speach!:

“As we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, “When will you be satisfied?” (…) No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

(…)

I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. (…)

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”

(…)

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.”

Yepp we can not sit down and be satisfied yet!
